There are several ways to search for dissertations, depending on when they were published and which university they came from. Many institutions make their theses and dissertations available through their institutional repository or library catalog and may not be widely indexed. You therefore might need to search the institutional holding directly or use a larger search engine like Google Scholar.
Below are several databases and indexes to search for dissertations and theses.
- The Research Repository @ WVU: Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
- The Research Repository @ WVU contains most WVU theses, dissertations, and problem reports from 1999 to the present.
- Proquest Dissertations and Theses Fulltext
- This subscription database is the world’s most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses, spanning from 1861 to the present day and offering full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997. WVU PhD dissertations and Master's theses are included. You should be aware that some institutions, such as Stanford and MIT, have stopped requiring their dissertations to be deposited in PQDT.
- Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations
- A comprehensive search of all Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) sites worldwide.
- Ebsco Open Dissertations
- Ebsco Open Dissertations (previously “American Doctoral Dissertations”) is an open-access database built to assist researchers in locating both historic and contemporary dissertations and theses. WVU PhD dissertations and Master's theses are included.
- Open Access Thesis and Dissertations (OATD)
- An index of over 7 million records of theses and dissertations published around the world. Index limited dissertations and theses that are freely available online.
- CORE (Connecting REpositories)
- An index of over 427 million research papers, including theses and dissertations.
- EThOS. The EThOS (Electronic Thesis Online Service) service from the British Library is currently unavailable due to a cyber attack, and there is no predicted date for it to be reinstated.
